Summer Heat: Tips to Keep Pets Cool and Comfortable
The UK summer can be a wonderful time to enjoy the outdoors with your pets, but rising temperatures can pose risks to their health.
Heatstroke, dehydration, and burned paws are just some of the dangers that come with the summer sun.
With these expert tips, you can ensure your furry friends stay cool and comfortable all season long.
1. Provide Plenty of Fresh Water
- Always Accessible Water: Ensure fresh, clean water is available at all times, especially during hot weather.
- Travel-Ready: Use a portable pet water bottle for outdoor adventures.
- Ice Treats: Add ice cubes to your pet’s water or create pet-safe frozen treats for extra hydration.

2. Create a Cool Environment
- Indoors: Keep blinds closed and use fans or air conditioning to cool your home.
- Outdoors: Provide shaded areas using umbrellas, tarpaulins, or trees.
- Cooling Mats: Invest in pet-friendly cooling mats or damp towels for your pet to lie on.

3. Avoid Walks During Peak Heat
- Stick to Early or Late Walks: Exercise your pet during the cooler parts of the day, such as early morning or late evening.
- Test the Pavement: Place the back of your hand on the pavement for five seconds. If it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for your pet.
- Protect Paws: Consider pet-safe paw balms or booties to protect sensitive pads.

4. Never Leave Pets in Cars
- Even a few minutes in a parked car can be fatal for pets. Temperatures inside a car can rise dramatically, even with the windows slightly open.

5. Watch for Signs of Heatstroke
Heatstroke is a life-threatening condition that requires immediate attention. Look for symptoms such as:
- Excessive panting or drooling
- Lethargy or confusion
- Vomiting or diarrhoea
- Bright red or pale gums
If you suspect heatstroke, cool your pet with damp towels, offer water, and contact your vet immediately.

6. Groom for Comfort
Regular grooming helps keep your pet’s coat manageable and free from mats, which can trap heat. However, avoid shaving double-coated breeds as their fur acts as insulation against both heat and cold.

7. Consider Parasite Protection
Summer brings an increase in fleas, ticks, and other parasites. Ensure your pet is protected with regular treatments and check-ups.
Many vet practices, including ours, offer in-house health plans that include parasite prevention as part of comprehensive pet care. You can find out more about the pet club here.
